It would be impossible to overstate H.P. Lovecraft’s (1890-1937) influence on SF, fantasy and horror, whether that be in written fiction, comics and art, movies and TV, or gaming. He’s found his way into music, conspiracies, and the occasional cautionary religious publication. He produced groundbreaking and genre-shaping work.

He was also a virulent racist and xenophobe, even by the standards of his time. His writing often reflects those views.

Lovecraft’s legacy has been subject to debate among fans of the fantastic. Until 2015, winners of the World Fantasy Award received a stylized bust of Lovecraft. After much public controversy, that design changed. Since 2016, winners have received an image of a gnarled tree against a full moon.

Some contemporary readers and writers refuse to engage with Lovecraft. Others accept his racism as an artifact of history, regrettable but unavoidable. Others have created works that use his conventions to examine and explore his more abhorrent views: David Nickle’s Eutopia and Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country, to name two.

In 2020, The Were-Traveler called for submissions of stories taking this approach for a “People of Color Destroy Lovecraft” issue. They preferred entries by writers “of color,” but said they would accept the best stories regardless. I’m Italian on my father’s side. While Lovecraft didn’t think much of Italians, we’re clearly “Caucasian,” even if, in my parents’ youth, some of my mother’s acquaintances asked her why she “couldn’t find a white one.” The multiple racist absurdities contained in their question notwithstanding, I couldn’t and didn’t identify myself as a person “of colour,” and was transparent about my background.

I have long had an idea for a Lovecraftian story, based on a dusty prank sometimes played by university students. The Were-Traveler’s challenge suggested a way to write that story, and I’m gratified that it sold.
